Bill Salonen Cup game 7 re-cap

SIJHL Media Update

Release date: Wednesday, April 11, 2012

Wisconsin Wilderness repeat as SIJHL champions

SPOONER, Wis. – Mike Dietrich’s second goal of the game during a two-man advantage with 11:36 remaining proved to be the difference as the Wisconsin Wilderness edged the Fort Frances Lakers 4-3 Wednesday in the seventh and deciding game of the Superior International Junior Hockey League’s Bill Salonen Cup championship final.

With the victory the Wilderness rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to not only capture the SIJHL crown, but also advance to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. A championship, which gets underway Tuesday in Thunder Bay.

Wisconsin was the first to strike in this one as Dietrich scooped up a loose puck in the slot and darted to his right where he ripped a quick shot past Tyler Ampe in the Fort Frances net at 12:19 of the opening period.

Extending the Wilderness cushion to 2-0 five minutes into the middle frame was Nick Drill as he was sent down the left side and made no mistake blasting his attempt past Ampe.

Drill struck again at 15:17, just moments after leaving the penalty box, where he was sprung free and tucked one through Ampe’s legs while falling to put Wisconsin up 3-0.

A much-needed tally by the Lakers came in the final moments of the second session as Henry Gutierrez fired a shot towards the net that beat a screened Tanner Milliron in the Wilderness net.

SIJHL Pizza Hut player of the year Byron Katapaytuk then pulled the Lakers to within one at 3:11 of the third as he lifted a backhander over Milliron’s shoulder.

With two Lakers in the penalty box Wisconsin went back up a pair as Dietrich finished off a nice three-way passing play with Zach Blaisdell and Anthony Calabrese that left him with a tap-in into a wide-open net.

The ever-resilient Lakers refused to quit and were rewarded with an extra-attacker goal with 1:10 remaining as Ampe was on the Fort Frances bench in favour of an extra attacker.

However, the visitors could not net the equalizer as the Wilderness ran out the clock in capturing their second consecutive SIJHL championship.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Fort Frances 38-30.

SIJHL final to go the distance as Wisconsin wins game 6

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Wisconsin Wilderness staved off elimination for a second straight contest as they rode the shutout goaltending of Tanner Milliron to blank the Fort Frances Lakers 1-0 Monday and thus force a seventh and deciding game Wednesday to determine a Superior International Junior Hockey League Bill Salonen Cup champion.

That match-up goes 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Northwest Sports Complex in Spooner, Wis., with the winner advancing to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. A championship April 17-21 in Thunder Bay.

The lone tally of the night came 2:18 into the second period as Wilderness forward Wilson Housley beat Lakers’ netminder Tyler Ampe as he notched his sixth marker of the postseason.

Milliron did the rest for Wisconsin turning aside all 23 shots he faced to record the victory and keep his team alive in their quest for the second straight SIJHL title.

Ampe was also solid, despite the setback, stopping 30 of 31 on the night.

Lakers 2 Wilderness 1

It was a night of broken records at the IFK arena tonight. The Lakers broke an attendance record with over 750 in attendance for tonights game, a 50/50 draw of over $1000.00, and more than 65 pucks for the puck chuck. The Lakers also came from behind tonight doubling up the Wilderness 2-1 to take a strangle hold on the SIJHL Bill Salonen Cup series 3 games to 1.

The first period went scoreless as both teams battled back and forth with both goaltendenders standing tall for their teams.

In the second period, Jeremy Johnson put the Wilderness on the board at 13:41 after taking a pass from Shane Topf and Wilson Housely he fired the puck behind Tyler Ampe. That would be all of the offense for the period.

The Lakers came out hard and fast early in the final period. Connor Hady fed the puck to a streaking Jordan Larson who buried a blistering snapper past Wilderness goalie Tanner Milliron to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tie until the 12:15 mark when Steve Terry broke out of the Lakers zone and feeding Henry Guiterrez. Guiterrez spotted Alex Bruess streaking up the left wing and feathered a great pass to Bruess who made no mistake going high glove side giving the Lakers their first lead and eventual winner of the game.

Tyler Ampe picked up his third win of the series facing 29 shots, while Tanner Milliron saw 26 Laker shots in the loss.

The Lakers now head to Wisconsin for game 5 on Saturday April 7th, 2012. Game 6 if needed will be back in Fort Frances on Monday April 9th at 7:30pm in the IFK arena.

Wisconsin joins Fort Frances in Bill Salonen Cup final

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Wisconsin Wilderness have joined the Fort Frances Lakers as the two teams that will compete for the Bill Salonen Cup and the Superior International Junior Hockey League championship.

Wisconsin earned their place in the final after completing a four-game sweep of the Thunder Bay North Stars Thursday evening with a 5-2 victory at the Fort William Gardens.

The lone tally of the opening frame came off the stick of Wilderness forward Clark Anderson who struck at 16:25.

Mike Dietrich increased the lead to 2-0 early in the middle stanza beating North Stars’ netminder Marc Nother with his seventh goal of the playoffs.

Thunder Bay stormed out in the third to tie it thanks to markers from Sam Dubinsky and Quinn Rempel making it 2-2 by 7:32 of the session.

However Wisconsin answered right back at 8:58 as Jordan Shockley notched the eventual game-winner to put the Wilderness ahead for good.

Nick Drill added some insurance with four minutes to go and Anderson’s second of the night, into the empty net, iced it in the late stages.

Tanner Milliron made 25 saves to record the victory while Nother faced 21 shots in defeat.

Despite the setback, the North Stars’ season is not over as they will serve as the host team in the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. A championship, April 17-21 at the Gardens.

They will be joined by either Wisconsin or Fort Frances along with the winners of the Northern Ontario and Ontario Jr. Hockey Leagues in a quest to see who will represent the region at the Royal Bank Cup May 5-13 in Humboldt, Sask.

The schedule for the Bill Salonen Cup final between Wisconsin and Fort Frances will be released once it is finalized.

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Jordan Larson of the Fort Frances Lakers has been named the SIJHL’s rookie of the year for the 2011-12 season.

The 16-year-old Fort Frances product was a near-unanimous choice for the honour earning the highest point total of any player in the award voting process, including six of seven first place votes and one second, in balloting done by the seven-member clubs that comprise the SIJHL.

As the third youngest player in the league, Larson currently leads all rookies in scoring with 68 points in 53 games, which leaves him fifth overall in SIJHL offensive production.

His 34 goals so far this season are the third most of any player in the league while the Lakers are 29-5-4 in games in which he records at least one point.

Larson came out on top over fellow rookie of the year finalists Jeremy Johnson of the Wisconsin Wilderness and Hunter Scott of the Duluth Clydesdales.

The Lakers’ forward becomes the fourth player from Fort Frances to earn the award in the 11-year history of the SIJHL joining the likes of Mitch Cain, who is currently in his freshman season at Bemidji State University of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
